I started my career as the Founding Dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine and have since transitioned to building a functional nutrition consulting business.   • The price of soda has decreased almost 40% since the 1970s, while the price of fruits and vegetables has increased almost 40%. Why? Money, power, and corruption... all at the expense people’s health and quality of life! The food industry and the government have irresponsibly pushed their own agenda instead of the health of Americans for decades. As a result we are faced with an epidemic of food-driven chronic disease. This is one of many important points that @markhymanmd talks about in his new book, Food What the Heck Should I Eat. The book is officially out this Tuesday.   • It’s easy to feel sorry for yourself or play victim, I’ve done it many times in my life. Sometimes it just takes a little perspective to move out of that place.   • There’s not one style of eating that works best for everyone because of biochemical individuality. But here’s a few patterns that I have observed in seeing thousands of functional medicine patients using food to create health (rather than focusing on weight loss): the Pegan Diet (which merges paleo and vegan principles) is an amazing long-term ‘way of eating’ for many; vegan diets tend to be hard on the digestive system; paleo diets can make it hard to get enough fiber (unless eating lots of veggies). In my latest article I give the run down on all of the controversy between vegan and paleo and the offspring of the two...the Pegan diet!   • I spent most of the day developing recipes with the person that taught me more about health, nutrition, food and cooking than anyone ever taught me in school. She has no nutrition degree but when it comes to wellness, she just gets it. She lives a healthy & balanced lifestyle not for the purpose of posting about it (she doesn’t have social media) or weighing herself (she doesn’t own a scale) but because it makes her feel good and it’s what’s best for our family. She questioned my neurologists when I was 14 and said...there has to be a better way than directly jumping to medication. That’s when she and my dad explored functional medicine. After I was diagnosed with a leaky gut and gluten intolerance, she completely adjusted her cooking to gluten-free and packed me every meal Bc it was impossible to eat out on a gluten-free diet. SO much I have learned from my incredible mom who has inspired my career and many of my recipes that you’ve experienced! And there’s more where that came from for recipe creations!   • Happy, clean and green cows (not literally green but grass-fed)! There’s obvious nutritional benefits to choosing grass-fed beef over grain-fed but the other thing to consider is that people have enough stress as it is...way too much to be eating stressed out animals!   • Processed Food Addiction is not a personal problem, it’s a societal epidemic. When societal norms promote junk food and make it affordable and accessible anytime and anywhere, people become addicted. In order to break this toxic cycle, we need more information and awareness!!   • Ever wonder why the USDA recommends 6 oz of grains per day for women under 51 and 7-8 oz per day for men?? Or why they recommend half of your grains be whole grain when we know that refined grains are directly associated with heart disease, type 2 diabetes and SIBO? Translation: eat 6-8 slices of bread or 6-8 cups of cereal per day—half of those can be white bread or refined grains. Say whatttt?!? I wonder all the time and I’ve tried for years to understand it.   • Last night @juliefoucher and I wrapped up the last FB Live for the @healthyselfreset! I said that I don’t believe that the ‘all foods fit’ approach works for everyone. I also have never bought the whole idea of everything in moderation because there’s too many highly processed foods that would qualify. I wrote a research paper on this a few years ago with @krissypicks and from everything we gathered, the term moderation is extremely subjective. This is what I know: food sensitivities are real, gluten-free isn’t a fad for most people, Diet Coke isn’t any better than regular coke and the body was not designed to process a diet high in processed foods. As consumers we need to demand better information and in the meantime, the most important thing you can do for your own nutrition is listen to your body! #nutrition #glutenfree #wholefoods #guthealth
