  • You think you make food & bev choices based on personal preference but what you don’t realize is that there’s millions of $$$ spent on manipulating those choices. The marketing and 💰 💰 💰 shapes food norms for people without them even knowing. The areas that are targeted the most: children and the poor. It’s so far from being ok!!! This is a pic from Mexico that my brother took for me last month...when we were driving the streets of Mexico for hours I realized that there were A TON of small huts/houses that had the Coca-Cola logo plastered on the front. WHY, I kept asking (to the point that everyone was annoyed)? Bc coke pays these people...knowing that they need money too badly to say no. Let’s call it taking advantage of someone else’s hardship in a very intrusive way. The result? A community of people that are impoverished begin to normalize the use of coke products thanks to these friendly signs on their neighbors homes. And they become more and more unhealthy. Don’t worry—they aren’t only targeting the poor...they target everyone from professional athletes to healthy/beauty blogs to sporting events to hospitals. Even the military are given Pepsi lanyards when working at the airshows to promote their sponsorship. My hope is that we as a society can wake up!!! It’s not ok and it really highlights the importance of voting with your fork/dollars and being a change agent!   • This chocolate banana bread recipe is making waves! And it’s finally up on BeingBrigid...link is in my bio. The recipe is gluten-free, casein-free and grain-free! And just an FYI...grain-free is not a fad! There’s evidence to show that it’s beneficial for metabolism AND gut health. It’s not for everyone but it’s definitely beneficial for some...especially people with GI issues or autoimmune diseases. The recipe also has grass-fed whey so it’s perfect for breakfast, a post-workout snack AND for extra glutathione/detoxification support!   • Feeling incredibly grateful to spin with so many women that inspire THE HECK out of me! My number one woman in my life—my beautiful Mom plus my pretend mom—Trish Kelley @health_is_wealth617 and her real life daughter, @gracekelleyy!   • Real life: ate a pint of ice cream last night in my 4th week of eating keto! 🙌🙌🙌 #notinketosis I bought this ice cream last week at Whole Paycheck (it was probably like $20) because it only had 7 grams of net carbs per serving (not pint!)! I figured that I could have a few bites at some point if I needed it. Yesterday I let myself work from 8am-9:30pm and I reached a point of desperation...eating not just a few bites but the whole pint! It’s rare for this to happen for me because I generally try not to be overly restrictive with my diet. But the combo of working too long without breaks and eating ketogenic for the last month was the perfect storm! So I’ll take my own advice: listen to your body, find a diet that works for you, and ask yourself WHY you’re eating what you’re eating. I don’t believe in an ‘all foods fit’ mindset because there’s too much sh**/harmful chemicals/food-like-substances on the food market for that to make sense but I do believe that dark chocolate, raw honey or pure maple syrup are good options sometimes! #keto #icecream #wholepaycheck
  • VEG FEST over here and I doubled up on sauerkraut—traditional and beet kraut because I love my microbiome! 🤣 Practicing what I preach with two of my go-to recommendations that never fail...eat fermented veggies on a daily basis (unless you have Candida overgrowth or severe dysbiosis) and at least 4-5 cups of non-starchy veggies everyyy day of your life (or as close as possible!). 😊🥦🥒🥕And no that doesn’t include America’s favorite vegetable: 🍟. It also doesn’t include potatoes, sweet potatoes, plantains, butternut squash, acorn squash, rutabaga or turnips! Those are starchy veggies that can be eaten in addition to your solid foundation of 4-5 cups of non-starchy veg! She’s known for being one of the best functional medicine doctors and notorious for having the longest waitlist for appointments at the @clevelandclinic Center for Functional Medicine. She treats her patient like humans rather than a diagnosis and helps them create health rather than managing disease. Such a loss for Cleveland but I know she’s going to do amazing things!   • Our health is directly related to the food environment that we live in and access to healthy foods. I spent yesterday exploring the food scene of NYC with a group of seven men. It was a team put together by @townhallohc to study food concepts for an exciting new project that will hopefully bring healthier and more accessible food options to Cleveland and beyond. My #1 job was obviously to keep the team of men in line 💁 while also taste testing a million dishes and assessing food options that are actually nutritious. 🥑🥥🍋 Theres so many food trends...some fake-healthy trends and other actual healthy trends. But the good news is that there’s SO much more consciousness around health and nutrition. Lots of chia seed puddings, avocado toast and matcha lattes...that is FOR SURE! Let’s hope that the actual-healthy trends expand to areas that don’t have access to unsweetened almond milk at a coffee shop or nutritious vegetable dishes! Bc everyone deserves access to healthy foods...even if you aren’t living in the lavish city of NY! Side note: you can tell I was with a group of men because the food was always half eaten by the time that I tried to take food pictures!
