What if feeling exhausted, bloated, inflamed, and completely drained every afternoon doesn’t have to be your normal?
For Hallie Abrams, founder of The Wardrobe Consultant and a trusted personal stylist for women over 40, these symptoms became impossible to ignore. For years, she experienced extreme fatigue, afternoon energy crashes, bloating, unexplained rashes, sleep issues, thyroid concerns, and changes associated with perimenopause and menopause. Even when she sought answers through traditional healthcare, she often felt like the focus was on individual symptoms rather than understanding the bigger picture.
In this episode of The BeingBrigid Show, Hallie shares the functional medicine journey that helped her understand her health from a more holistic perspective. She and Brigid Titgemeier discuss blood sugar, thyroid health, gut health, inflammation, hormones, nutrition, sleep, sustainable lifestyle changes, and what it really looks like to improve your health one step at a time.
And because Hallie is a personal stylist, the conversation doesn’t stop with nutrition. She also shares her best styling advice for women over 40, including how to build a functional wardrobe, dress for your individual body and lifestyle, and use clothing as a tool for confidence.

Hallie’s Journey With Fatigue, Menopause & Thyroid Health
Hallie describes spending years feeling exhausted despite getting what seemed like enough sleep. She experienced severe afternoon energy crashes, sometimes becoming so tired that she had to pull over while driving. She also dealt with bloating, unexplained rashes, food reactions, elevated cholesterol, and symptoms that became especially noticeable as she transitioned through perimenopause and into menopause.
At one point, testing revealed significantly elevated thyroid antibodies. Hallie struggled to reconcile the numbers with the lack of actionable answers she was receiving and began looking for a more comprehensive approach to her health.
Her experience ultimately led her to explore functional medicine and more personalized testing, where she began looking beyond individual symptoms and considering the interconnected role of nutrition, hormones, gut health, blood sugar, inflammation, and lifestyle.
Finding a Functional Medicine Approach to Women’s Health
Hallie says that one of the challenges she encountered when looking for functional medicine care was finding an approach that actually centered women’s health as a whole. She wanted to look at more than hormones alone and find a practitioner who could consider nutrition, lifestyle, supplements, testing, hormone health, and other aspects of her health together.
This is one of the central ideas behind functional nutrition: rather than assuming there is one universal solution, personalized nutrition looks at an individual’s symptoms, health history, lifestyle, and needs to determine where nutrition and lifestyle changes may be supportive. For Hallie, that meant gradually layering changes rather than trying to completely overhaul her life overnight.
How the Blood Sugar Reset Changed Hallie’s Breakfast
One of Hallie’s biggest discoveries was the Blood Sugar Reset. After working on her health and being encouraged to increase her fiber intake, she came across Brigid’s Blood Sugar Reset and decided to give it a try. One of the biggest changes was replacing her previous breakfast of Greek yogurt, granola, and berries with a nutrient-dense smoothie containing protein, fiber, psyllium husk, and vegetables.
Hallie says the smoothie helped her feel significantly more satiated and ultimately noticed a five-pound change after making the switch. She also found that she wasn’t experiencing the same afternoon yawning and energy crash that had become so familiar to her.
The bigger takeaway wasn’t simply one particular smoothie. It was learning how to create meals that supported satiety and made it easier to stay consistent throughout the day.
Blood Sugar, Energy & Sustainable Nutrition
Hallie’s experience illustrates why blood sugar can be an important part of women’s nutrition, particularly when someone is dealing with energy crashes, cravings, or feeling hungry shortly after meals. Rather than approaching nutrition as a restrictive diet or a list of foods that are completely off limits, Hallie describes the Blood Sugar Reset as giving her a roadmap and structure while still allowing flexibility.
That distinction became particularly important because of her previous experience with paleo dieting. Although that approach helped her lose weight, Hallie says it negatively affected her relationship with food and created a stronger sense of restriction and food preoccupation. Her current approach is different: use nutrition as a framework for supporting health while maintaining flexibility and enjoyment.
Reducing Inflammation Through Personalized Nutrition
One of the most noticeable changes Hallie experienced was a reduction in what she describes as inflammation and puffiness. She also noticed improvements in physical discomfort and found that she could exercise without experiencing the same cycle of working out, getting hurt, and having to stop.
Hallie’s journey included a period of following a low-histamine diet after testing and clinical guidance suggested histamine intolerance may have been contributing to some of her symptoms. She describes learning that the goal wasn’t necessarily to label foods as permanently “good” or “bad,” but to understand how certain choices fit into her individual needs. This personalized approach allowed her to make decisions based on her own health rather than following another rigid diet.
Gut Health, Fiber & the Gut Microbiome
Gut health became another major component of Hallie’s functional medicine journey. Testing identified areas that prompted her care team to focus on supporting her gut, including increasing fiber and incorporating targeted probiotic and prebiotic support. Hallie describes gradually adding these changes and planning to continue monitoring her progress through follow-up testing.
Brigid explains how the gut microbiome can intersect with multiple areas of health, including hormones, thyroid function, blood sugar, and cravings. Rather than trying to fix everything at once, Hallie’s experience demonstrates the value of taking an incremental approach: identify areas that need attention, make a change, evaluate the response, and continue building from there.
Sleep, Circadian Rhythm & Hormone Health
Nutrition was only one part of Hallie’s transformation. She also began paying much closer attention to sleep quality and her circadian rhythm. Instead of assuming that sleeping for a certain number of hours automatically meant she was getting restorative sleep, she started prioritizing an earlier bedtime and getting into bed earlier in the evening.
She also focused on getting natural sunlight in the morning. These seemingly small habits became part of a larger lifestyle shift that Hallie says added up over time. Rather than making one dramatic change, she focused on consistency and gradually built healthier routines.
From Dieting to a Healthier Relationship With Food
Hallie’s story also highlights an important part of women’s health that often gets overlooked: the emotional relationship we have with food. Growing up around dieting, Hallie eventually tried paleo herself and says that the restrictive approach changed the way she thought about food. For the first time, she found herself constantly thinking about what she could and couldn’t eat.
Her experience helped shape her current philosophy that healthy eating shouldn’t require constant food rules or fear. Instead, she describes the Blood Sugar Reset as “scaffolding” and a “roadmap”—a structure that helps guide her choices without dictating every decision. That balance between structure and flexibility is a major part of sustainable nutrition and long-term consistency.
“I Don’t Just Want to Live Long. I Want to Live Well.”
Perhaps the most powerful part of Hallie’s health transformation is that her goal isn’t simply a number on the scale or a longer lifespan. She wants to be strong enough to travel, get down on the floor with future grandchildren, lift them up, stay active, and continue doing the things she loves as she gets older.
That is what eating for longevity can look like in real life: not simply adding years to your life, but supporting the strength, energy, mobility, and vitality that allow you to enjoy those years.
Hallie’s Five Wardrobe Staples for Women Over 40
The second half of the conversation turns toward Hallie’s specialty: personal styling. She emphasizes that a wardrobe should work for your individual body, budget, taste, and lifestyle. What works for one woman may not work for another, and something being trendy doesn’t automatically make it practical for your life. Her five foundational wardrobe pieces include:
Hallie also recommends thinking about your wardrobe in layers. The majority of your wardrobe budget should go toward hardworking basics that you’ll wear frequently, while more unique and trend-driven pieces can make up a smaller portion.
How to Dress for Your Body & Feel More Confident
Hallie believes clothing can be used to create visual balance and proportion—and, more importantly, to help women feel confident rather than ashamed of their bodies. She discusses different approaches for creating visual balance depending on where someone naturally carries more or less volume, including using necklines, patterns, proportions, and accessories strategically.
When it comes to changes in body composition around perimenopause and menopause, Hallie also shares practical styling strategies for creating a more defined visual waist without feeling like you have to hide your body. Her larger message is that clothing should serve you. Your clothes don’t determine your worth, and a size that doesn’t fit isn’t a measure of whether you have succeeded or failed.
Build Your Outfit Around Something You Love
One of Hallie’s simplest styling tips is to start with one piece you really want to wear. Maybe it’s a favorite shirt, a statement necklace, a pair of pants that feels comfortable, or a piece that works particularly well for the occasion. Start there and build the rest of the outfit around it. She compares this to decorating a room or experimenting in the kitchen: sometimes you have to play.
Hallie also recommends taking photos of your outfits and keeping them in an album on your phone. You can look back at what worked, what felt comfortable, what you received compliments on, and what you would style differently next time.
Ask Hallie: Personalized Styling Support With AI
Hallie also shares her newest project, Ask Hallie, an AI-powered styling tool trained around her own styling philosophy, content, and voice. The goal is to bridge the gap between free styling advice and one-on-one personal styling. Users can ask questions about what to wear, upload photos, get styling guidance, and request personalized shopping recommendations. It’s designed to give women a more accessible way to get personalized styling support when they need it.
Hallie’s Advice for Women Who Want to Start a Business
To close the conversation, Hallie shares advice for women who are thinking about starting a business or pursuing something they’re passionate about. Her message is simple: find a supportive partner, go for it, don’t be afraid of what other people think, and remember that failure can be information that helps you recalibrate.
Most importantly, she encourages women to find something they genuinely love that also serves other people. Whether you’re working on your nutrition, your health, your wardrobe, or your career, Hallie’s story is ultimately about creating a life that feels good to live—not chasing perfection.
